On April 1, reporters learned from the Northern Jiangsu Navigation Administration that in the first quarter of 2026, the ten-tier ship locks of the Northern Jiangsu Canal cumulatively opened 69,000 times, allowing passage for 12,000 fleets and 167,000 cargo ships. The total ship throughput reached 514 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 1.1%. Cargo volume completed was 82.32 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 5.7%, delivering a "good start" report card with both quantity and quality rising, injecting strong water transport momentum into the economic development of the canal region.
During the Spring Festival travel season, the Northern Jiangsu Canal implemented scientific scheduling and optimized operational plans to ensure priority and rapid passage for ships transporting key materials. First-quarter data shows that coal transport volume reached 29.35 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 12.4%, demonstrating strong growth momentum. This has effectively ensured the safe and stable energy supply for riverside power plants and industrial enterprises, providing solid support for the smooth operation of the regional economy and society.
Notably, container transport on the Northern Jiangsu Canal continued to maintain a good development trend in the first quarter, completing the transport of 177,000 TEUs, a year-on-year increase of 1.0%. With the continuous improvement of the multimodal transport system and the in-depth promotion of "bulk-to-container" conversion, container transport has become an important growth driver for the Northern Jiangsu Canal in serving the region's export-oriented economy and improving transport efficiency.
Next, the Northern Jiangsu Navigation Administration will continue to strengthen operational scheduling, optimize service guarantees, fully leverage the comparative advantages of water transport, and better serve the implementation of national strategies and the high-quality development of the regional economy.
