An automated upgrade project at the Port of Guangzhou has successfully passed the special pilot acceptance review for the National Transportation Powerhouse Initiative.
China News Service, Guangzhou, March 17 (Reporter Cai Minjie) On the 17th, reporters learned from Guangzhou Port Group that the Ministry of Transport recently issued the "Acceptance Opinions on the Special Pilot Program for 'Port Function Optimization and Enhancement' in Building a Strong Transportation Nation (First Batch)," announcing that all 14 pilot tasks, including the "Full-process Automation Upgrade and Transformation Pilot of the Grain General Terminal Handling System at Guangzhou Port Nansha," have been completed, achieving the expected pilot goals and passing acceptance.
As the only pilot task selected in Guangdong Province, this project focuses on the field of grain handling operations, adopting the concept of "single-machine automation and multi-machine collaboration." It has fully completed the automation and localization transformation of handling equipment across all berths, promoting the transition and upgrade of traditional operation modes to fully automated operations. This marks a significant breakthrough in the construction of smart ports, forming a replicable and scalable "Guangzhou experience" for port intelligent transformation.
The project adopts an integrated construction plan of "automation upgrade and transformation of bulk grain handling equipment + unmanned inspection operation system for substations + intelligent management system for the entire process of bulk grain terminal operations," covering the full range of scenarios including front-end terminal handling equipment, rear-end power facilities, and operation management. It is the largest-scale domestic terminal and the first to achieve professionalized, full-process, fully automated, and intelligent operation upgrades for bulk grain handling.
Considering the characteristics of traditional bulk grain terminal operations, the project completed the automation and localization transformation of handling equipment at berths 6–8, increasing the annual throughput capacity of the berths from 4 million tons to 4.5 million tons. For the first time in the mainland bulk grain sector, it achieved fully automated collaborative operations of multi-type unloading equipment (shared cabin) and scraper-type continuous unloading machines. Overall production efficiency increased by 20%, labor costs were reduced by approximately 79%, equipment attendance rate reached 98.4%, and operational risks caused by high temperatures, dust, and mechanical failures were reduced.
Relying on digital twin technology, the project independently developed an intelligent management system for the entire process of bulk grain handling. It connects the entire data chain of unloading, warehousing, and loading onto vehicles/ships, achieving intelligent control and auxiliary decision-making for the entire operation process through massive data integration and analysis. This effectively addresses the pain points of scattered production elements such as port equipment, storage yards, and vehicle transfers under traditional modes, which are difficult to manage comprehensively.
